The Municipality of Stagiron-Acanthou is in North Halkidiki, in the area just before Mount Athos and has a population of 8781 residents, according to the inventory of 2001 but the real population exceeds 10.000 residents. The extent of the Municipal area covers 253.373 acres.
The name of the municipality derived from Ancient Stagira and Ancient Acanthus,two cities that played an important role in the region and more generally in Halkidiki during ancient time.
The distance from Thessaloniki is about 90 kilometres and it constitutes the natural entry for the monastic state of Mount Athos.
It is constituted by eight (8) Municipal Villages, Ammouliani (564 residents), Ierissos (3118 residents), Nea Roda (1156 residents), Olympiada (649 residents), Ouranoupolis (960 residents), Stagira (372 residents), Stratoniki (788 residents) and Stratoni (1174 residents). Capital of the Municipality is Ierissos, where one will find most of the public services in the area .

The people of Ierissos, Stratoniki, Stratoni and Stagira are local, while the people of Ammouliani, Ouranoupolis, Olympiada and Nea Roda are mainly refugees from the Asia Minor who came to reside in these areas in 1922.

Main occupations of the people here are tourism, fishing, mining, agriculture, timber and various services.
Particularly important is also the natural goegraphy of the area, which begins from mountainous and wooded regions, ending further south to open seas and clean sandy beaches,and last but not least the island of Ammoyliani which is unique.

The main economic activity of the Municipality of Stagiron-Acanthou comes from tourism while fishing, mining,trade,agriculture,livestock-farming and timber also contribute .
In Agriculture, the distribution of cultivable extents has as follows: Arable cultures 60,5%, Vegetable farming 0,8%, Arborised cultures 35,5%, Grapevines 0,1%, Fallows 2,5%.The prevailing cultures in the region of Municipality are the cultivation of olive trees and the culture of hard wheat.

The livestock-farming constitutes the 18% of crude product in the primary sector. It dominates sheep and gaot farming while there is also cow farming in the area.The production of honey is also present.

Even though the forests cover 50% of the area, the presence of forestal production in Crude Value of Production is only 5%.

The subsoil which is rich in mining and minerals in the area of Mantemohoria, show economic interest and the tradition of mining has always been present throughout the centuries.

The activities involved in the secondary sector include three individual units:

a) the transformation of agricultural and vegetable products,
v) the transformation of the remaining products,
c) traditional and craft-based manufactures.

Traditional naval art, small units of charcoal production , furniture , metal and aluminium constructions, production of concrete, asbestos, carpet making, production of tsipouro,, confectioneries, bakeries, mining enterprises etc..
In the Tourist sector there are quite a few small and large hotel units, rooms to let and restaurants.

Ending there are also lots of businesses and enterprises which offer their services.
